Two Silos at Sunrise

Montana

by Gloria L. Corneliusen

Montana is a desolate place
The wind blows hot by day
and it's cold breath howls all night.
It dries up the heart and the land
Setting the tumbleweeds free.

Montana is a beautiful place
the bluffs, the cliffs, Chief Mountain
A place where natives roamed the land
Once as numerous as the buffalo
they feasted on.

Montana is for farmers and livestock
Tall gangly men that still say “Ma’am”.
Cowboys driving pick-up trucks
While horses graze idly in the nearby fields.
Grain silos silhouetted against the early dawn.

Montana is casino neon lights flashing
Set up to lure the desperate in.
They cuddle up to the bottle
to forget their never ending troubles
Only to lose themselves along the way.
